Answer: Chromecast is digital & sends both audio & video to device. Make sure you have the correct audio selected on your surround sound. Ex. Cabl, TV, Sat, DVD ETC. Next make sure that output from TV is actually connected to surround sound. There's no sound if it isn't. Or, If you are getting picture & no audio then it is possible you can only hear sound from TV's speakers -if that's the case then your need to use digital output from TV: (2) choices usually: fiber optic or black coaxial, usually only 1 of each on newer TV's- good luck!

The television will be the source of your sound with Chromecast. Make sure your receiver is set to receive the TV as source and not another device. If you still have no sound, try disconnecting your surround system to see if you get direct sound from the TV. If not your Chromecast is likely bad and needs to be replaced.

The salesman at Best Buy suggested I disconnect the chromecast and reconnect. Then check the volume on the device you are streaming from.

set your surround sound to broadcast the hdmi output you are streaming to if the default setting is not working. Just like you might do for a blu-ray player or other such items

I've not had any issues with getting sound with the Chromecast when I had it. Let me ask you this, when you try casting to the TV without the surround sound, does it work?

If you get sound without the surround sound connected, then the Chromecast is not the problem. The problem is likely to in the surround sound connection. So I'd recommend checking your audio cables to your TV.

If you are NOT getting sound when you connect the Chromecast to your TV (without the surround sound connected), then you may have a defective Chromecast device and you may want to return it for a working one.

Reset the Chromecast by unplugging it and plugging it back in. If this doesn't fix the problem. Make sure that the surround sound system is hooked up directly to the TV either through Optical IN or an AUX port.

Ensure your TV is set to external speaker output when using the Chromecast HDMI port and run the appropriate external speaker cabling from the TV to the surround system...otherwise it will use your TV speakers.

Is your Chromecast plugged straight into your television or into the receiver of your home theater system? If its plugged in to your television, try plugging it in to an open HDMI port on your receiver and see if that solves the problem. If your Surround Sound receiver does not have HDMI inputs, you would need find out if your television has an audio out port and connect that into your receiver to send the Chromecast audio to the receiver. Sorry if that was a bit jumbled, I would need know the type of television and surround sound setup you have to give a definitive answer. Good luck!

Your TV and receiver must support audio return for it to work. Look at your manual to see if this feature is supported.
