Use google chrome cast as HD set top box I am going to buy a smart HD TV . Can the google chrome cast be used as HD set top box? Is it a good substitute for HD set top boxes rented out by cable companies?

I could be mistaken but this Chromecast device is `not' a replacement for a set top box. IT only streams video from the internet - like Yahoo or other streaming services. Some services require that you have an account to access certain videos/programs. It is not a replacement for [Time Warner/Comcast/etc.] cable or Dish TV programming. Do more research as I could be wrong... The one-time low price is pretty much what attracted me and I thought I'd get basic TV-like programming.. Good Luck!

No. But you can play TV company apps thru it, but its not all your programming and you still have to have cable/dish service to use apps.

you cannot use this as an HD Setop box to replace the one you get from the cable companies. you can stream netflix, hulu,, hbo go, etc.

No, I don't believe you can. The only way I see you being able to use it as a cable set top box is if your cable company makes an app for the device that allows for live tv. You can use it to watch movies or shows through Netflix or Hulu or HBO go, etc. But if you are going to just use those kinds of apps then your smart TV might be compatible and already come with them preloaded.

Google chrome can't be used as a substitute for an HD box but it can accompany one. It enhances the experience by letting you use apps and programs that you are ready maybe using on your desktop laptop tablet or cell phone and let you see it on your TV. For instance if you're already paying for Netflix subscription instead of using it on your laptop or Xbox or Wii now you can actually view those same movies and shows directly on your TV screen. It also allows you to watch things on TV that you might sit and watch on other devices on the on the regular TV so that multiple people come watch the whole family come watch without trying to just watch it from a small handheld device. But it's not a cable provider or HD service so you still would actually need a set top box in order to have any cable programming

This does not replace your cable set top box. Not all cable channels have an app to display their content, and sometimes not very well if they do. And if you have a Smart TV it probably has the same apps as chromecast already.

There are no apps I'm aware of that would allow the Chromecast to function as a Cable set top box replacement.

You can only cast from certain apps. & from google chrome on your pc, so unless you subscribe to a cable or satalite co. you most likely won't be able to view much content, as most websites require you to sign in to your tv provider to view shows or movies.

The Chromecast doesn't have any apps built into to it. Instead, it is dependent on the apps on your tablet or smartphone or what is being shown in a Chrome browser. It is not as easy to use as a set top box because you are limited to what the cable company streams through their app or what agreements they have made to allow streaming through various channels' apps. And, this is assuming they allow their content to be casted to the Chromecast.
