You can suspend the SIM card for 3 months. Active military can suspend 39 months (not a typo). Phone number stays on SIM. Google Fi Help on this topic here: https://support.google.com/fi/answer/6079346?hl=en Google Fi gives you a $10 credit when you activate a SIM card, so the cost to buy a SIM card is almost zero. To keep your number and suspend service you can port the number to Google Voice (which is a free account), then buy another SIM card and port the number to the SIM card when you travel again. Porting is free. You would go through a learning curve to set this up, but it should work repeatedly. You would also have continuous use of the phone number.
