You are correct, each earbud does come with built-in microphone capability. Coincidentally I also tend to charge one earbud while listening and speaking into with the other

With the Google Pixel Buds A-Series each earbud has Dual beamforming microphones. But please be advised that call quality also depends on signal strength, environment, network traffic, and many other factors.
