You do need a google account. You also need to get the Google Home app from the app store to set it up. Google Chrome is just a browser but you need the app to set up the mini.

No, it is IOS (Apple device) and Android compatible. It works great!

If you have a google account, you can  set up voice recognition and link your calendar. It uses the Google search engine, so chrome is useful.
