Yes, it is used to link the sensor with the main thermostat. And yes, the main thermostat has it's own built in sensor, so you get a reading where it is located, and a reading from the room sensors in each room you place one in. I bought six more sensors for a total of seven different rooms, eight, if you count the actual thermostat, and they all work great together, for a perfect temperature throughout the entire house.
