“Just purchased for my daughters dorm room.Windows do not open and air is quite stale in the room. Was not clear from the instructions on where to place the unit. I sat it on the window sill, which is behind her bed....nothing blocking around it. OK?”

Just place it in any corner of the room

This allows for the exhaust to move freely from the unit and circulate the air throughout the room better. However, if there is no other place where the unit will not have something in front of it, then this may be the best spot for the unit. As long as the Air Purifier is located where it is not easily knocked over by persons, on a firm, level and flat location, that there are no heavy objects on the Air Purifier and that front of the unit faces away from the closest wall or furniture and no grilles are blocked it should be fine.
