Yes you can partition the disc and install Linux using a Live USB image. You do not need to opt out of S mode. I want to keep the S Mode so I do not have to worry about my kids installing malware inadvertently when I am not watching them.

Windows laptops in S mode are locked down to only run apps from the Microsoft Store, meaning they cannot install or boot Linux distributions like Ubuntu or Puppy Linux directly. However, you can switch out of S mode (this is a one-way process) to install Linux alongside Windows. If you're looking for a lightweight Linux experience without modifying your system, you could also try running Linux from a live USB without installing it.
