Although the ink cartridges themselves are the same size, the ink reservoirs on the inside of the cartridge are larger on the XL cartridges than the standard cartridges.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I asked this same question when I first began using these cartridges. The answer I got was that the XL cartridges give you a better quality print as well as the fact that you could also print more with them. In my experience, I have tried them and find that the quality of the print is a little better but the ink itself last about as long as the regular 564 cartridge. so I guess it is really a personal preference.
