I asked him to define minimum and he said that as long as the printer display does not say the cartridge is empty and it needs to be replaced, that should work. I dumped the 6520 and bought a 7640, which includes a newer technology that does not required the color cartridge (just 1 for the 7640) to be present in order to print in black only.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This HP Printer requires the use of all of ink cartridges in order to print. All of the ink cartridges must be functional and not completely depleted of ink. This HP Printer has the ability to be manually set to where it prints using just the black ink cartridge. Please keep in mind that in order to achieve a true black you will need the use of all of the inks. If you manually set the printer to use just the black ink only the prints will be in grayscale.
