• I don't think so I usually only buy the black ink which is what I use the most and my printer works fine, I have on screen option to see when my ink gets low as well.

• Thank you for the question. With a two-cartridge system (one black, one tri-color) you'll need both cartridges in place for start-up and maintenance cycles. You can remove the color cartridge when printing black only, but we recommend keeping the color cartridge near and re-installing when you've completed printing in black. For flawless performance, please make sure to protect the integrity of the color cartridge and the chip when it is not in the printer.
