• yes because when you run out it's use the color to make up black ink

• It has been my experience that printing in black only does not use any of the colored cartridge even if the page you are printing has colored images.

• You can print only using the Black color and, the ink of the color cartridge does not get used up.

• If your printer uses HP 65 inks then you can certainly use the single cartridge mode if you prefer.
