“What makes the fan run? Mine seems to run pretty often and lasts several minutes. I don't have many tabs open and nothing taxing -- no gaming or video. It concerns me that it's doing something it shouldn't.”

McAfee security and probably the integrated graphics card. You can change the settings to be less intensive and I'd recommend finding someone who knows what they're doing when they try to delete McAfee because if a single piece is left it will completely redownload itself and run in the background constantly

It may do this based on usage (several apps open at once), internal temperature, or external temperature, to maintain a safe and cool working environment inside the tiny compartment. If it gets very hot and the fan does not turn on, please contact HP Support.
