Dear HP- "The extender" is open all the way- see attached photos using mere standard size paper (8.5 X 11 ) and with only a job of 8 sheets the paper began to slide off- So take that to your project engineers.. Take a look at your 8610 series (which I bought the 9025E to replace) for further edification on what an extender tray, of proper length, is meant to accomplish. JimB

It will slide all the way out and there is a little plastic lip that you can flip upwards so it catches your letter or legal-size media. Please see our HP Support channel on YouTube if you need a visual on how to extend the tray.
