Open. Maybe 8" by 8". You can either tape a piece of old screen or even cheesecloth over the opening. Description say's it can go against the back wall, but I wouldn't. Leave room to breath. Nothing to do with the fridge, but a 'potpourri' satchel of hot pepper flakes in the area you wish the cat not to go works.
