“Can I hook up earphones to the speaker wires, rather than to the earphone jack on the front? I have heard that I might need a device that reduces the output of the speaker wires. If this is true, can you recommend such a device?”

There is no device that I know of that would reduce the power from the speaker lines, though you could make it yourself, but why do that when it has a ear phone output in the front and you could hook up more that one set of ear phone on it.
