Im not 100% sure but i believe you need the dock for it. My daughter has a switch and while it does use HDMI, its plugged into the dock and its HDMI to HDMI. Theres another cord that plugs in the dock as well that powers it on. That plugs into an outlet and the other end plugs in the dock next to where one side of the HDMI cord is plugged in. So, i def think you need the dock for the switch to put it up on the tv. Hope this helps. Usually the switches come with the dock. i cant remember if it came with the HDMI cord that connects the dock to the tv. It does come with the power cord for it. Sorry if its confusing
