What's the mic for, is it a karaoke machine as well? null

This is not a Karaoke. An external source (Karaoke, computer, tablet, etc) will need to be connected through the HDMI port to send the audio/video signal to the Ion projector and speaker. The microphone is to be used for your vocal to be combined with the music playing in the background.

The mic worked. It’s basically a PA with and echo / reverb effect. It’s ok but better exists.

Happy to assist! You can use this unit for a variety of different purposes. As the previous user stated, if you connect a device that runs a karaoke program on it, you can indeed use the unit for karaoke. Hope this helps!
