• Not really, I use them on a flight and can hear outside conversations and announcement BUT VERY muffeled. The noise of engine is cut out significantly, though.

• Not totally, but very well... I could tell my daughter was talking to me when she was right in front of me but couldn't really hear her with them on. Just turn the music up a bit and that is all you will hear. ;-)

• No, the Sony on ear headphones do not shut out surrounding noise. You'd need to upgrade to over the ear headphones for privacy.
