Yes they do come off. You have to twist the grill a quarter turn the right or left and they come off. These speakers are very stout in their design. What I mean is that they have a very thick case and body. Ia m not sure how these would look mounted behind a panel with just the surface grill showing. In my case the speaker sits in the opening with the lip or rim of the speaker resting on the surface of the panel. The mounting screws then go into the surface panel. In fact he speakers in cars are setups the same way. If you have access to the front and back of the panel you are mounting the speakers these speakers will still work but you will need to purchase some stainless steel bolts/nuts to mount them as these only come with screws. The speakers are very ruggedly built and sound great so you will be happy with them. I purchased these to replace my outside surface mounted camper speakers.
