“I've tried to plug in both the vga and the HDMI cords and both connect, but I can't figure out how to take the monitor out of power saving mode. So there is nothing on the screen. How do I turn off power saving mode? The menu doesn't come up either...”

I'm guessing you need to tell your laptop that you connected a second monitro. Press the windows key and P together then select "extend"

You can do this by clicking on the magnifying glass on the bottom left of your Windows 10 screen. Type "external monitor" in the search window. Select "Change settings for multiple displays" and follow the instructions for setting up an external monitor.
