“Can this unit be installed above a range that does not have a cabinet above it? Our range has nothing over it and I would need to install this directly to the wall with no cabinet above the microwave. Also do I need to buy anyting to attach it to the wall”

I don't think so. it actually hangs from the shelf above it.
