I’ve seen pictures where the Logitech Combo can be used with the iPad Pro 12.9 in a vertical position. I can’t figure out how this is possible. There is no connection for a vertical connection that I can see. Are the pictures wrong? null

Pictures are wrong for normal typing. It only works in the horizontal position. However,  the keyboard still works when opened.

The case which holds the actual iPad separates from the keyboard section of the case so the iPad still in its protective half can be used separately.

Absolutely wrong no way to go vertical
