• I did not have to download any software, my blue tooth picked it up immediately and there was no hesitation in connection.

• The mouse will work as normal without the software, but you won't be able to reconfigure the side buttons. Also, if you do download the software and reassign their functions, they'll only work on computers that also have the software. Otherwise they'll default back to the original settings.
