• This is what I researched yesterday: It is only legal to operate the GMRS channels if you have a license from the FCC. (GMRS channels output higher wattage than FRS channels). I applied on the FCC website yesterday afternoon and received my license via email this morning. In order to save you some time, you need to apply for a ZA - General Mobile Radio (GMRS) license. It took me a while to figure out ZA was the one you need out of the multiple options available. The license is only $70 for 5 years. I am not sure I understand your second question, but this radio will communicate on all channels, both FRS and GMRS.

• The FCC does require a License for the GMRS frequencies. It is a ten-year license and they are getting ready to lower the fee to about $35. Right now it's about $70. Unlike amateur radio service, there is no test, just the fee, and the application. Once you have a license it includes you and ALL immediate family members. One license for the family not for each person.

• Everyone saying you need a license is wrong. These aren’t higher than 2 watts which is what the FCC recently updated the rules to.
