If specs are the same, price may be higher because of a possible increase in manufacturing cost! An extra year warrantee is certainly worth $5!

Depends on how you are with electronics. If your gear usually lasts close to forever, I would save the $8. But if you tend to break or mistreat your gear, then it may be worth it. Mine is not located in a high traffic area with plenty of ventilation and no chance of getting wet from any spills.
