This is NOT a modem. This basically allows you to gain more Ethernet ports if you’re in need of more then your modem or router provides. You will still need a modem to connect to the interwebs, and a router if you have multiple devices that need connections. But you still need a ISP to gain access to the interwebs

Based on my experience, the only way to have access to the Internet using the Modem is with an internet provider. I am not sure that there is general public free Wi-Fi access. For me the Modem works great because it gives me access to more Ethernet space to add other equipment etc...
