• Yes, you should do the set-up in the same room as the router, but then you can move it to the halfway point where it needs to be.

• Mine is about 50 feet from my router. Not sure how close it would have to be to get a good enough signal to extend (maybe 100 feet?)I have a weak router, so it needed to be a bit closer to extend the range to what I would call reasonable. From the extender, it goes about another 125 feet.
