Yes, you should do the set-up in the same room as the router, but then you can move it to the halfway point where it needs to be.

Not sure how close it would have to be to get a good enough signal to extend (maybe 100 feet?)I have a weak router, so it needed to be a bit closer to extend the range to what I would call reasonable. From the extender, it goes about another 125 feet.
