You would only need to update your router if you plan on raising your internet service speed higher than what your current router can handle. This modem will handle gigabyte speeds from your provider.

Please try again later.This is just the cable modem, so if you have a router already, you should be good to go, if not you'll have to buy one (unless you're only connecting one device to the modem-not typical). I bought the netgear AC1900 wifi-router to pair with the cable modem. They perform great. If you're a Cox customer, as an example, they typically deploy a combo modem/wifi-router all-in-one device.
