I have a 300 sq ft house and only have 1 extender. All areas are covered by the router and this extender. The extender isn't in the line of sight of the router and it still works perfect.

It depends on how much area you need to cover. I am in a 2500 sq. ft.. house. My 6XS is on the opposite end of the house from my router and one floor below. I have seamless coverage with just one 6XS Extender.
