You have to follow the instructions and log in to the website given to set it up properly with a passcode. Ethernet cable is not required.

If you have ever set up a router before then his will be a breeze. The only difference is the connection to the router is wireless yet you still access the router web page to setup. When the device gets plugged in it goes into default mode and you log into the wifi of the device. When connected to the device you will then access the web page setup and continue the process. 

HINT: If you can not get a connection then try static or manual IP.

It connects wirelessly to your main WiFi. You have to plug it into an electrical outlet to get power. Typically you would put it half way in between your main WiFi and the trouble area, so that it can "relay" the signal between the two areas.

Just plug into an electrical socket. After booting up, it will locate all Wifi networks within range that are transmitting their identification (SSID). Using a cell phone, tablet, or laptop, you connect wirelessly to the unit and adjust the setting to make it work for your particular network.
