Yes and Yes. You can do the back haul via a wired connection, which I see as the preferred solution. As far as a patch panel is concerned you are speaking to my heart. Its the pro way to go, but adds expense and (to some) complexity. Just make sure to use quality patch cables and gear. -Best wishes.

You should try it via the wifi backhaul first, and only if performance is so low should you move to ethernet which is 2.4X slower than wifi. ethernet is 1.0gbps, while the wifi @ 5ghz is 2.4gbps. so you will see performance drop via ethernet. the more you add in the way such as patch panels the less quality you will get, If you are going ethernet, then go directly to the main router, there's 4 ports available in the back, or 3 if you bond WAN/P1 for uplink to the modem. so only use a hub or other means if absolutely necessary.
