“If i use this as a multi room receiver, does the remote work from different rooms or does it need to be in the same room as the receiver? Looking to control from different rooms. Options?”

The physical remote is IR and requires direct line of sight, but through the Onkyo control app you can control the receiver wirelessly using your phone.

With the Onkyo Controller app you have complete control of the receiver thru your phone.

Use the onkyo control app on your phone to control zone 2 via wifi. Works great.

The remote needs to be pointed at the receiver.

It doesn’t. You need a universal Wi-Fi remote.
