• In order from the lights to work, you must have the Hue Bridge. The bridge allows you to connect the lights to home automation assistants such has Home Kit, Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. The bulbs will not work as a stand-alone item.

• as far as I know you have to have a hub to control automation. With no hub it will work just as a regular light bulb.

• The hub is the wireless bridge that connects the lights with the control apps, and your amazon echo/google home. you need the hub.
