You can mix and match the whites and the colors. In the Hue app, you can group the bulbs and select individual brightness levels and color ranges. I ended up buying all color bulbs for a similar size room and am glad i have the option to set color everywhere instead of some being white all the time.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You don't have to switch them all but when you want the disco lighting, you will want to only use the colored bulbs. I would think about two bulbs and maybe on of the Hue strip lights. The strip lights are good for lighting effects. I put some on the back of one of my TV's and and used Philips Sync to have the lighting stay in sync with the TV screen as the scene changes.

Of course, you will only be able to control the Hue bulbs in terms of color schemes and so forth. I am looking forward to getting them for my living room, but waiting until I can buy all 4. If you buy two, I'd set them up on opposite sides, shut off the white ones and create a mood with the two you have. It would work pretty well. If you only need white color, then I'd buy white for that room. But, if you want to go with color, then I'd buy only color for that space. I have a white bulb in a fan light in one room, but that is the only bulb in that area.
