Should apple car play work with out usb connected? null

You will need the USB. All apple car play radios typically require a USB connection for car play features. You can still Bluetooth for phone and media, but just those will work wirelessly. I do love this radio.

It can stream audio without a USB cable via Bluetooth, but Android Auto and CarPlay requires a USB cable connection.

It would be nice if it did but I have not seen it work in any of the cars that I have rented

Wireless Carplay is not a feature, usb only.
