I read that it was put there solely to hold the cord during transport so it wouldn't be crushed.

It's used for shipping purposes, you can remove it and put the screw back in. It's designed to hold the power cord in place during transit and nothing else. It serves no other functional purpose, and you won't find it mentioned in any of the user manuals.
