This is a great question and we've been researching this for quite some time. The consensus seems to be a MINIMUM of 18", but we plan on making it at least 21". There have been problems reported with microwave handles getting too hot to touch or even having the paint melt off of them. I haven't seen these problems reported on the Samsung microwave, but we don't want to take any chances with this. If anyone else has more info on this, please feel free to advise.
