If you buy an unlock phone you can change carriers with that phone. Not sure which box to check I went into Best Buy purchased mine and I was already a verizion customer. Verizon was going to charge me $40 for the new phone. I called and complained because I have been a long time customer and they removed the $40 fee. Just and FYI.

Not all phone carriers use the same standard, but an UNLOCKED Verizon phone would work on AT&T (and vice versa), but not on Sprint/T-Mobile. If you plan to stay with Verizon, you do not need to purchase an UNLOCKED phone.
