From what I have learned at Best Buy is, to take advantage of the $1 deal, you have to be eligible for an upgrade. If your current phone is not eligible for an upgrade, you will have to pay retail price for the phone. Activation fee is thru Verizon, and is usually $40. The Best Buy salespeople can check your verizon account and let you know what the fees will be. I've had great luck there.
