• Yes, buy the unlocked version with the "activate later* option that what I did with my and yes is unlocked for any carrier.

• So basically if you have a carrier like Verizon and At&t you can upgrade your old phone if you qualify. There is a downside where if you want to activate it. You will be charged 45 dollars to your next bill. But if you don't want to get charged the 45 dollars then go the "ACTIVATE LATER ROUTE". I personally do that because I don't mind the original price. What I am planning to do is go to Bestbuy when the phone comes out and I'll trade in my iphone 11 pro max. I got an estimate around 650 for it and that's good considering the price is 2000.
