“Will I need to use the optical connection if I want the sound bar to turn on when I turn on the TV (which is a recent Samsung), or will the HDMI connection do the same? I just don’t want to keep the sound bar remote around just for turning it off/on.”

The HDMI do the same. I don't use the soundbar remote at all.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have a Sony TV, not Samsung - but I only need to hookup the HDMI ARC and the TV remote takes care of power and volume. The sound bar remote is still useful though for setting the soundbar mode (standard, music, voice enhancement, etc), also have some control of tone -but I tend to set once and leave those settings alone. You may have additional control possible from the TV remote as you have a Samsung TV. I am quite happy with the audio quality of this soundbar - I thought it beat the Sonos Beam handily.
