Your Chromebook should be able to mount the drive, as long as you don't format it NTSF or some weird format. The exFAT file system should be fine on Chromebook. As for how many photos it would hold, that would really depend on the file format (RAW or JPEG) and the resolution of your camera.

If you are trying to save super high quality RAW image files then that will take up more space. It will work with any laptop that has a USB-C port or adapter USB.
