We have it in a 600 sq. ft. bedroom with high ceilings and it does very well. I leave it in auto, and it hardly ever moves off the lowest fan setting. If it senses something in the air, then it speeds the fan up to circulate it faster. I would imagine it could handle the 1200 sq. ft., but the fan would just be running higher most of the time.
