“Is it direct sound or are external speakers required?”

• It has built in speakers, although I have never really used them. I have it hooked up to my Yamaha 5.1 receiver using an optical cable for sound. I use it more as a monitor in my home office to stream music with over wifi. An HDMI cable between the two lets me use the Yamaha on screen menus as well. Perfect for my use.
