I would recommend 1 play 1, and if you feel that is not enough you always pick up another and pair them together. But I feel 1 should cut it for that size room. If you wanted Alexa capability out of the box then go with a Sonos One.

Of course stereo sound is better so I will probably buy a second speaker at some point. I'm really pleased with the sound of one speaker though, it plays pretty loud with no distortion and I like the clean minimalist look.
