“Can you play your Apple TV through Play 1 speakers or do I have to get the playbar?”

Playbar if you want to do anything besides stream music or podcasts.

I have not been able to do that yet except optical input on sound bar then select it to go to all other speakers on system.It also works if apple tv is plugged into stereo receiver switcher and then sent through a link or Sonus input. I am trying to develop an amazon app for Alexa that will bridge both just not yet. Using the optical input to sound bar from TV is the best quality choice.

No, you would need a Playbar, a Playbase, or a Beam.

Sadly you will have to get a soundbar. The Play 1 does not have the ability to pair with the Apple TV as it’s a WiFi speaker without a physical input. Also Apply doesn't support it without an intermediary device in the mix.
