Yes, you can control the volume from your desktop to a sonos speaker in any room. The speakers also have play/pause and volume +/- hardware buttons on them, so you can control the volume even away from your desktop.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The way it works is that your computer/tablet/smartphone actually behaves as a remote control for the unit. Each Sonos unit is autonomous and capable of streaming by itself, it will just wait the "command" from the software installed in your somputer/tablet/smartphone. Once you issue the "command" (be it play a single song, play a thousand entries playlist, play an internet radio station, etc) the unit will do it by itself, you can turn off the computer/tablet/smartphone if you desire. But it's actually better than that, because the remote control software present useful features, like hability to connect the unit to a number of streaming services (Spotify, Google Play, TuneIn, etc), hability to control several units from a single device like grouping two Sonos 1 to play the same song in sync just splitting left/right channels or play different playlists in each, etc. Buy it, you won't regret.

Unless you have music on your computer, you will need to register the various services you may have, ie. Pandora, Spotify etc. you can also play saved music on your desktop. It's cool the way guests can play music from their phones or tablets if you let them.

Once you are running the app, you can identify music files on PCs or laptops on your local network. Once you have shared the music library with Sonos, you can play the music from the library or even music on your cell phone to your Sonos system. You always have to control the system via the app.

Can have different things playing on both at the same time. Volume controls on desktop control that volume on those speakers. Volume control on Sonos speaker controls the volume on the Sonos speaker.

Please try again later.If you are playing (streaming, a cd or whatever) to computer speakers, that is through some app, or cd drive on your computer - not the sonos app. You can have that app (or whatever it is) on your computer going, but that music, via that app, doesn't drive/go to the sonos speaker. Sonos has it's own app that you run on your desktop, and that app (with it's own volume control) drives the sonos speaker - separately from your desktop speakers.

Please try again later.You can control the speaker in the kitchen (or wherever) from the desktop app instead of the smartphone app, but playing songs you find on the internet immediately to your sonos is a more complicated process. I had to use the jamcast app to play my internet audio through the sonos system. a weird work around but it works pretty well with only a slight amount of delay
