The Play 1 can be used as surround speakers IF you own the Playbar. Otherwise you can use Play 1s in different rooms for music listening. You can program 2 of them to play as a stereo set of speakers. The speakers can be moved wherever you can receive a wifi signal. You may connect speakers via wifi or you can connect a speaker or better yet a Sonos Boost and create a Sonos wireless network which works great and does not use up lots of bandwidth with multiple speakers set up.

I haven't actually done this but from what I read, yes, you can do this.

the speakers are adjusted to a room, from a single spot. They don't expect to be moved. The instructions say they several units can be used for one sound in several rooms.
If the are set up as a pair, they should act as stereo set ( left and right).
