You don't need a receiver or amp. As long as you have wifi and using the sonos app, you can stream your music what is on your cell phone or tablet, or by using amazon, Pandora or any others. In the sonos app, you just set it up as stereo (left and right speakers). I have the sonos sound bar and sub and the sound is unbelievable. I have it connected to my oled tv. Hope this helps.

I bought play1 and loved it and then ended up getting play5 then did the whole surround thing for the tv. I did not have to buy the boost or any extra receivers.

You can link in your itunes or library, play off Spotify, Pandora and lots of other music services through the Sonos app. You do not need a receiver or amp, and do not need the sound bar or subwoofer. The subwoofer is just another speaker that emphasizes bass.

If you are using it for your Tv and to stream music then start with the sound bar. It is versatile and gives off enough sound to fill a house. You are eventually going to want it anyway so start with it. If you just want a free range speaker to play music in a room then the play 1 is great. The sub and play bar combo is amazing. I will say that the system is only as good as your wifi signal. If you have troubles there expect to have troubles with set up. After that if runs great. The play 3 is more outdoors I would say. The sound is too loins for many indoors settings.
